Tweetie2開発者Loren Brichterインタビュー１
iPhoneアプリのベストTwitterクライアントと言っても過言ではないTweetie2。その開発者Loren Brichter氏がどんな人物なのか調べてみたところインタビュー記事をいくつか見つけることができた。英語の勉強も兼ねて、モノ作りのエッセンス的なところをいくつかピックアップしたい。
今回は、Tweetie2が発売される前の2009年8月に行われた、Macworldの『An interview with Tweetie creator Loren Brichter』から。
人気の秘訣はバランス
Tweetieの人気がどんどん高まっているが、その理由は？と聞かれ…
I think it struck the perfect balance between power and simplicity. Before Tweetie, you had a choice between clients that had a simple interface but were lacking in features, or clients that had every feature imaginable but an interface where couldn’t figure out how to use half of them. Tweetie brought to the table some really powerful features in a really intuitive package.
「性能と単純さのバランスを成立させたことかな。Tweetieが出る以前は２つの選択肢しかなかった。ひとつはシンプルだけど機能が足りないもの、もう一方は思いつく限りの機能が付いているけどその半分しか使い方がわからないインターフェースをしたもの。Tweetieは本当にパワフルな機能を本当に直感的に使えるようにしたのさ。」
競争がより良いものを生み出す
Twitterクライアントがプラットフォームを問わずたくさん登場しているけど、今は飽和状態なのかと聞かれ…
I really don’t know. One of the fantastic things about Twitter clients is how easy it is for users to jump from one to another. Just type in a username and password and off you go. It’s possible for anyone to write a Twitter client nowadays and have the opportunity to completely blow everyone else out of the water. It’s very exciting. Very democratic. And it certainly seems like everyone and their mother is trying to do just that. I’m just happy to be part of it, I know the developers of other clients and I can say definitively that competition is making all of us write better apps.
「そいつは分からないね。Twitterクライアントのいい所のひとつは、ユーザーが簡単に他へ乗り換えることができるところだよ。ユーザー名とパスワードを入れたり、消したりするだけでね。今は誰もがTwitterクライアントを作れる時代だし、他人を完全に打ち負かす機会だってある。それってとてもワクワクすることだし、ドラマティックだよ。きっと誰もが、その人のお母さんでさえ直ぐにやってみようと思うんじゃないかな。そんな時代の一部にいられて僕は本当に幸せだよ。他のクライアントの開発者も知り合いにいるし、競争がよりよいアプリケーションを生み出しているというのは確かなんだよね。」
ユーザーの声を活かす
ユーザーの反響は？その声をプロダクトにどれくらい反映させるの？と聞かれ…
I had a pretty clear vision of what I wanted to build from the beginning, but the feedback was invaluable. Everybody uses Twitter a little bit differently, and I tried to find those few options which when tweaked in the right combination, could make Tweetie work exactly how you wanted. There’s still a ton of work to do in this regard, and I’m happy to get feedback from everyone.
「僕ははじめからこういうものを作りたいという、かなり明確なビジョンがあったんだけど、ユーザーのフィードバックというのは計り知れないほど貴重だね。Twitterの使い方は皆少しずつ違うことがわかって、僕もTweetieを少し調整するだけでユーザーの理想のものとなるようにしていきたいと思ったよ。期待に答えるためには、まだまだやることが沢山あるけど、皆からフィードバックがもらえるのは嬉しいことだよね。」
